Great Hotel. Rooms are plain, simple but comfortable, with clean sheets and bathrooms. The food is great with a huge menu so there should be something for all tastes. A great location for walking the hills. Quiet and peaceful too, like a calm retreat. Update 2025. The hotel is being refurbished and I think it reopens in May. It will probably be wonderful as this is what it needed to make it fabulous!

Lovely hotel and staff. Service was excellent and the room was comfortable and clean. We ate in the hotel restaurant for both nights we stayed and the food was lovely and tasty. It was homemade and of a very good standard. I can thoroughly recommend the breakfast too. The usual choice of cereals or fresh fruit and yoghurt was on a buffet table. Our order was taken for cooked breakfast (vegetarian options were available) and hot drinks. I recommend the eggs benedict royale and the scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon. Delicious 😋! It's good place to stay for walking or visiting places like Whitby. The only fly in the ointment was that the computer went down when we were leaving and our bill was muddled up. We were undercharged and didn't realise at first that our second evening meal had been missed off the bill. We rectified this by phone later.

We came for food only. The place is dog friendly so we brought our dog which is a bonus. The menu said chicken pie and 3 of the 4 of us wanted that. We were disappointed though when the server said oh it’s not chicken it’s steak, the menu hasn’t been changed. Could have told us when they gave us the menus!! Anyway we had steak pie instead. It was glorious! Homemade with fabulous meat and rich gravy. Served with lots of veg and a huge portion of chunky chips. Downside it was absolutely freezing in the place. The staff wore thick hoodies and scarves! I refused to eat in my coat but I had to wrap my scarf around myself. I wouldn’t come again in the winter. Think this was the same on our last visit ages ago. Need to crank up the heating!

Amazing food in the restaurant. Bedrooms are a little tired but are shortly to be revamped.

Booked this hotel to stay for the night as we were at a wedding further down the road. Staff very friendly and breakfast in the morning was excellent. The actual room though was very dated, furniture old and bed very uncomfortable. It was kept very clean though. The hotel was going through refurbishments whilst we were there but this was not mentioned when booking. Our view out of the bedroom window was a skip and lots of dumped white goods. It will look very nice when it is finished and definitely needed. Hotel was adequate for the one night stay we wanted

I visited the hotel with my husband for lunch today. On entry, we were greeted by a very nice member of staff , who made us feel welcome. We were seated at a table and asked if we would like some drinks, so we ordered a tea and a Diet Pepsi. So far, so good. When we were given the menus, we were a bit surprised. Apart from the steak and the Parmo everything else seemed a bit too ‘Masterchefy’ . We both ordered a Parmo with skinny fries and salad because the steak was very pricey. I then visited the ladies, and to be honest I was rather disappointed. The whole block seemed to be very unloved. The silicon round the sinks is old and discoloured. It does not look clean. The first cubicle that I went in had a leak from the back of the toilet on the floor. The disabled cubicle light was so dim , it was more like a night light. But worst of all, the smell was awful. I did manage to catch a member of staff and mention the leak and the smell and she apologised and said it would be sorted. Now, back to the food. Parmos are obviously different everywhere you go, and everyone has different preferences. I like mine not too thick. Unfortunately the parmos here were very thick. They were tender, but the chicken had very little taste, other than the grease of the melted cheese, so the garlic sauce was vital. The salad was simply leaves with very small bits of radish and cucumber. My husband got a tiny bit of tomato. The salad was covered in a very oily dressing. The skinny fries were really just like McDonald’s fries. They had no substance to them whatsoever. And sadly , it was all made worse because I still had the bad toilet smell in my nose for the entire meal. The outside of the hotel is quite scruffy and a lot of the upstairs windows look sad and neglected. I don’t think we will be returning here unless it has a complete makeover. Sorry.

Stayed here for 1 night and the room was a good size with 3 singles beds , bed was comfy and a good size bathroom . On the whole clean but could do with updating which they do have signs up saying this is happening. We ate here also and the food was lovely. The staff are very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our stay

Just had the most fabulous breakfast here - I'd rate it as outstanding for the quality of ingredients and professionalism of the checking. Staff are all friendly and helpful. Rooms are tired but are being refurbished for 2025.

This is a review of the bar restaurant service. We did not stay in hotel. The business is scheduling a full refurb in 2025. It needs it as it’s currently stuck in 1980. It was a weekday night and pretty quiet. So little in the way of pub atmosphere. The food was OK. Not great. It’s pretty much the same prices as the other, very popular, pubs in the village. The bar offer was safe. A big range of fizzy big brewery beers and lagers. No craft beers or real ales unless you count Carlsberg’s version of Shipyard. The fish and chips had a funny ‘wet’ texture. Crispy batter would have been nice. Chunky chips were huge. Could have benefitted from more precooking as they were hard. Like raw potatoes. Chicken Parmesan was dry and a bit unappetising. Smoked cauliflower steak with fries was a bit dull. Didn’t bother with coffee or desserts as, by 8 pm, the bar was emptying and the tables being set for breakfast. So a 3/5 for food.

Rude staff, room with awful odor, 2nd room dirty, food service poor. Inexperienced and rude staff, including managers.. Save your money

I can't comment on the accommodation as I didn't stay here. But it was a pleasant atmosphere in the bar, the food was good, and the service excellent. I noted there was outside seating that faced the evening sun, so probably quite pleasant in the summer.

Ideally located for going for walks but very difficult to visit if you don't drive. Breakfast was good and one of the staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms aren't the best especially for the price paid for the room they are very old and tired and match what you would expect. There was mold around the bath which wasn't the most pleasant experience but again expected for an old fashioned room. I didn't expect a high tech modern experience but the rooms could use some refreshing. Having paid around £130 for the room I was severely disappointed and could have a much better experience for this price.

A good hotel. Thanks to their own taxiservice, ideal for walkers of the Cleveland way

We stayed here while walking the Cleveland Way. We didn't have an evening meal here but the breakfast was good. The staff were really friendly and helpful. We were pleasantly surprised that the hotel offers packed lunches and lifts back to the Cleveland Way. Most people seemed to be getting lifts to Clay Bank but we wanted to be dropped at the end of Bank Lane, beneath the Wainstones. Our driver was a little confused by this! Am surprised the hotel does not dvertise this service more widely.

We just popped in for Sunday dinner. Fortunately, they had one table free. The meal was excellent. It was well cooked, a good variety of vegetables, well seasoned and enough for the hungriest appetite. The red cabbage, had a nice hint of clove. The carrot and parsnip were nicely cooked with a delicious sweetness to them. All in all a good meal and nicely located at the edge of the Moors.

The 6th most expensive of the 17 accommodations I booked for the C2C – and it did not live up to expectations or cost. The building and rooms were dated and tired; however, the beds were reasonably comfy. The shower was an attachment in the bath – very retro. The TV was tiny and there were only two T-bags for two thirsty walkers! Breakfast was varied and cooked to order. The salad packed lunch, for walkers, was dollop of tune/mayo on a few salad leave in a biggish cardboard box – didn’t really last in the day pack! They said the hotel is to be refurbished soon – but currently, at £122 per night, it’s pricey for the standard of hotel.

Best food I've had in a long time. Friendly staff and a lovely location. I'd drive back there just for the venison pie. Very good.

The nice hotel will be renovated in 2025, which is absolutely necessary! But the best is being made of the current situation. However, the price-performance ratio is not right for me.

I had a disappointing experience during our Sunday lunch at our usual spot, the Wainstones Hotel. It was honestly one of the worst culinary experiences I’ve had. The food arrived cold, which was exacerbated by the chilly plates it was served on. The vegetables were undercooked and tough, and the slow-cooked beef resembled leather. The service was lacking; it felt rushed, with no follow-up to ensure our satisfaction or offer additional condiments or gravy. Having been loyal patrons for over 20 years, it’s regrettable that we won’t be returning anytime soon.

Stopped for lunch by chance en-route. Turned out to be a great decision, by me! Food was proper good old pub grub and deserves a huge mention. Service was excellent and I'd highly recommend the restaurant for a nice bite in friendly surroundings A++++

We have just returned after spending a couple of nights at the Wainstones Hotel. Although the rooms would benefit from some updating they were nice and warm with a comfy bed and lovely fluffy towels. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was also very good. Excellent selection for breakfast and also the evening meal. Would definitely recommend if you fancy a good value break for a couple of nights.

Lovely hotel, good for exploring the area. Room was clean, big bed, was a 4 poster. Bathroom was spotless. Evening meal was good lots to choose from. Breakfast is really good and lots off it. Lady who served us is fantastic. Can't do enough for everyone in the dining room. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming. A friendly hotel and very good value
